Originally a base camp for exploration, the Belt has become the social as well as physical dividing line between the “old world” of the inner planets and the “Frontier” of the Outer. Consequently, jurisdictions over colonies in the Belt are difficult to say for certain. Most allow themselves to fall under ISSP law only when it suits them, not seeing why anyone but themselves should have sway over them. They can be a fractious lot, but tend to unite when opposed by someone that is not a “Belter.”
Eros – one of the earliest Belt colonies, Eros’ habitats were built inside the asteroid as it was hollowed out by mining. Once other, larger colony ports were built, Eros lost its importance and much of the (legal) scrutiny from authorities. So to restore its dwindling economy, it converted to the entertainment business, especially gambling and institutionalized prostitution. Game note: Eros is modeled after Las Vegas.
Ceres – the largest asteroid and colony in the Belt. Like its predecessor, Eros, Ceres was built inside the asteroid as mining removed material. It was the first large colony to use ion drives to induce a spin to provide gravity. It is considered the hub of Belter culture and trade. Controversially, police security on the station is contracted through AstroNova, a Martian company.
The Dai-Lao Quarantine Zone – Dai-Lao Reach was a thriving community of loosely related colonies until a lethal viral infection broke out in 2055. Severe quarantine protocols, enforced by ISSP gunships, prevented the epidemic from spreading further. After 4 months, everyone in the Quarantine Zone is dead, over 5000 men, women and children. The Quarantine Zone remains deserted to this day, Belter made satellites marking the boarders broadcasting warnings not to disturb the dead unless you want to join them. Ghost ship sightings and mysterious disappearances are common stories from the area but are never substantiated.
Tijuana – a small domed colony whose architecture, culture and free-thinking attitude toward hard drink and fiestas is modeled after its namesake on Earth. Though hydroponic domes (large enough to hold what would on Earth be called fields) adjacent to the main living structure provide food and oxygen, these necessities and water are supplemented by traders that come to “relax” in this law-light freehold. Game note: this asteroid colony is modeled after its namesake.
